Trigger

Trigger came to us from a breeder, wide-eyed and full of wonder at the big new world around him. He had settled in so well, he was learning to walk on a lead, enjoying cuddles, and had even moved to a foster home for his very first taste of home life. But sadly, things took a heartbreaking turn. Trigger began limping and was being closely monitored by our vets. He was placed on restricted exercise in the hope that rest would help, but his condition quickly worsened. His mobility deteriorated, and he began screaming in pain, unable to walk. We rushed him to a specialist vet, and he had life changing spinal surgery thanks to the donations of MT supporters.
Trigger is now 4 weeks post op, having stayed in foster during that time. Whilst initially on strict crate rest, he has now started to go out for short walks, or in a pram. He loves going out for walks and hops with joy when I get his harness out. Due to his back, he will only need limited exercise each day.
His favourite thing in the whole world is being close to his humans, especially on their lap. He doesn’t like to be left (will bark initially) so he needs someone around most of the time to keep him company. He has been very good with toileting, providing you take him out regularly, he is completely clean. He sleeps through the night with no accidents too.
Trigger gets on with male and female dogs of all shapes and sizes, but would benefit from being homed with similar sized dogs to himself, ideally fellow Daxies (due to being so fragile)! He can chase cats so a home without small furries would be ideal. Trigger has endless love and companionship to give to someone willing to be patient with his rehabilitation and put in the necessary care to keep him progressing. Trigger could be homed with older dog-savvy teens that understand Trigger is delicate and will need to be handled with care and precaution, if handled at all.
Note from Trigger’s vet physio:
Trigger has been a model patient smashing all his rehab exercises, pushing himself a little more each day for a treat and an ear rub. At the start of June he was completely paralysed with grade 4-5 IVDD, yet in just four weeks he now has excellent mobility and loves showing off his walking skills. This is testament to Trigger’s amazing spirit to live life to the full and his dedicated foster mum helping him achieve so much in such a short space of time.
Due to the spinal surgery Trigger’s perfect home needs to be willing to spend 5 minutes a day maintaining his strength and mobility with a few simple home based exercises. His home also needs to be dachshund safe, so no jumping on and off furniture or sliding down stairs out of control! As his vet physio I am happy to continue to support his new owners for free, initially, dependent on location this might be face to face or via video link, alternatively I can work with his new family to find an excellent vet physio local to them.
Please be aware that any further treatment relating to Trigger's back may not be covered by insurance and any potential adopters need to be aware of this.
