17-12-2022 Zee is an extremely scared little boy who has come to us from a breeder. He will need a very experienced, calm and quiet adult only home, without visiting children, where there is at least one kind resident dog to be his friend and guide him about how to live in a home with humans who will love him. At the moment Zee does not accept being handled so we will start to slowly gets him used to us and update once he has settled in a bit more and started to believe we are going to be kind and very gentle with him.
Zee has never even seen the inside of a home before and so this will be completely overwhelming at first and he will need to learn new skills like house training. This is something that will take him time to learn as the garden will be as scary for him and the inside of the home. Once he is confident being in the garden, lead walking will need to start there to make sure he is comfortable wearing a harness and lead before venturing out in the world and double leading Zee is a must.
Zee needs adopters who really understand he is a project dog and who have the time, love and patience to help him discover the joys that his new life will bring.
10-01-23 UPDATE Zee has progressed a lot since arriving with us, however if you were to approach his kennel, you would not think this was the case as he barks at you through the bars. Zee does not like being in the kennel or being put back in there and gets stressed. He needs a very experienced human who is confident with a dog who can be stubborn and likes to have his own way. Once he gets to know you and lets you see his affectionate side then he is more accepting of listening to commands. Zee does have potential to bite but once you know how to work with him and his quirks, this is very rare. Zee knows how to walk on a lead and tries to be clean in his kennel through the day so we believe he has been a pet in the past. In the right home, Zee could be an only dog, he isn't very interested in dogs at the moment but is in no way lacking confidence. Zee is a very loving dog once you get to know him and understand him. In a home that knows how to correctly handle a dog like Zee, he will be amazing.
29-01-23 UPDATE
Lovely lovely little Zee. Poor Zee I suspect has been a pet at some point, he is completely clean in his kennel and loves humans that he trusts.
I think he's probably been manhandled, as many small dogs are, it seems he has had enough of it, and is very clear about this. We've managed to make some good progress since he's been here. Zee now is happy to have his harness put on and taken off, as long as this is done slowly, and he's spoken to calmly and happily throughout. He just needs to keep having positive experiences with humans and handling and I'm sure he'll get there. I've only worked with Zee for 2 days and he hasn't snapped at me once. He has given one little warning growl the first time I was putting his harness on, but I respected this and gave him a break to cool off, and then gently and slowly continued and he was fine. He is very clear in his body language when he is uncomfortable and this has to be respected and not pushed. Then once he trusts you, you can see that his body language is so much more relaxed.
Zee should not be told off or disciplined for expressing his feelings, this will result in worse and more drastic reactions as he will learn that humans don't respect when he asks for space.
I really can see Zee being such a little star with the right people. He needs people who are super understanding, patient, and who can read dogs body language like it's second nature. He lovvvves his long walks, and his dinner and treats! This is an excellent way to build up a bond initially.
I can see that Zee will probably be waiting a while here, and we'll make as much progress as we can in that time, but I hope he won't wait for too too long as he really is a wonderful boy who is very sad to find himself here!
PLEASE NOTE: We nearly always home dogs who have come from breeders where there is ALREADY A RESIDENT DOG living in the house. They have usually never lived in a house before and are only used to canine company. They usually get their confidence and learn faster with another dog to copy from. This also helps with house training and learning how to walk on a lead. They will make lovely pets but do need a lot of love, time and patience. If the ex breeding dog you are interested in can be an only dog it will say so in its write up. Please read our information on ADOPTING EX-BREEDING DOGS before you apply.
