05-08-24 Mickey is a darling boy who is quite frightened of humans at times and has come to us from Ukraine via War Paws Rescue to find the forever family he has been waiting for.
Mickey has come SUCH a long way, but still has such a long way to go. When Mickey first arrived in Ukraine he was terrified of everyone and everything, just getting near him was a challenge, he would grumble at you and run at any chance he could. With a LOT of work, now all you need to do is hold a slip lead open and he will slowly let you loop it around his neck. At the beginning Mickey wouldn't walk and would pull back on his harness, it took a lot of gentle encouragement and practice. In Ukraine Mickey walked happily on a lead in a secure area and had been for multiple walks, finally starting to enjoy sniffs.
Since arriving at Many Tears it's clear that Mickey loves investigating every smell going in the playyard. He also run around the play area and loves other dogs. We have been told that back in Ukraine Mickey would get excited to see humans he knows, and play bows and does a little howl when he's really excited which we cannot wait to start seeing once he has settled further. Mickey will allow you to do anything you need within his comfort zones but he still does not really enjoy human touch, and not all dogs do, but he still finds it uncomfortable - so this definitely needs to be worked on with adopters who understand this is a slow process (but so rewarding and life changing for Mickey!).
Mickey is such a funny boy with a big character that he is now starting to show us, he needs a special home that will continue to work with him and give him the time and patience he needs, and the space, but also to push him slowly into growing and facing the world eventually.
Mickey gets so much comfort and security from his kennel friends and loves to play with them. He will definitely need a home with a confident resident dog that can help show him this new world he's found himself in. He has never been in a home before so will need plenty of patience and understanding as he gets used to this massive change and learns new skills such as housetraining and being around so many new objects and sounds found in a home. Mickey will need an adult only home where adopters can build a bond with him, give him plenty of time to settle and be mindful that he is new to the UK so will never have seen/heard things we consider normal so will need to be introduced into the big wide world very slowly and securely, and put in environments he can grow in confidence and flourish. Mickey has a passport.

Mickey has been tested for Heartworm, Ehrlichia, Anaplasmosis, Borrelia, Babesia and Canine Brucellosis while in the Ukraine between 2022-2023, He did have and was treated for Heartworms but is now negative for Heartworms since 2023. Mickey has also been tested for Heartworm, Ehrlichia, Anaplasmosis, Borrelia and Canine Brucellosis since his arrival at the rescue using Bionote rapid tests and all were negative. We understand that vets have differing policies in regards to imported dogs and may request testing again in 3 months hence why these dogs are by a reduced adoption fee. Our rehoming team can provide futher information on the tests completed if required. We will be retesting the dogs again in 3 months if they have not been adopted by then and are happy for adopters to bring their dogs back to the rescue for testing and will only charge the cost of the tests.

25-09-24 UPDATE

Mickey has been in kennels now for nearly 3 months and has had zero interest.
Today was my first time meeting Mickey and he was very unsure of me at first, he would sniff my hand and then walk backwards away from me.
Once I got my slip lead out he let me put it around his neck and take him for a little walk. Mickey spent the time on his walk sniffing the ground, and exploring his surroundings.
Once I had been out with mickey for 5 minutes I slowly gave him a gentle fuss on his head, he was very unsure at first but gradually relaxed enough and let me smooth him.
I took mickey past our barn cats on our walk and he didn't seemed fazed by them at all, he sniffed the air and carried on to walk past them, so mickey may possibly be able to be homed with resident cats also! Mickey relies a lot on his kennel freinds so would definitely need to be homed with at least one kind resident dog and no visitors if possible.
Once mickey has settled into a home i believe he with blossom into the most amazing companion.
He really deserves a lovely home, and people to call his own!
